A soldier follows the general's order and forbids people from crossing the facing page. This picturebook utilizes the shape and anatomy of a book format - the gutter is part of the story, something I rarely see in picturebooks. The story is simple but is multilayered in its connection to borders, rules, territory, and how the innocence of play can help in daring to dream! The medium used by the illustrator is striking, using felt markers and preserving the textures of coloring - makes one recall childhood artworks. I noticed that almost all characters (except for 4) are painted with pink (white) skin tones. The pre-manufactured felt markers could have dictated the choices. However, there is a blue-green family with orange hair, so there was an opportunity for a variety of characters. My favorite line in this book is Boken tillhör alla!2
In this meeting, I plan to have us read the book and draw with colorful markers 🪄 Maybe discuss or share personal stories connected to borders and breaking the rules. Feel free to bring your own sketchbook 📓
