The votes are in! All two of them 📘📘 Thank you to those who voted. In August, we are reading 🥁
Kiosken
Anete Melece
Lilla Piratförlaget, 2020
ISBN 978-91-7813-112-9
This picturebook was originally published in Latvian; we will read the Swedish version with översättning1 by Juris Kronbergs. If you're like me and want to make sure you have the pronunciation down, I suggest listening to the audio narration by Shada Sulhav (Producer: Klara Grape, Barnradion). You can also watch the animated version.
🎪 The word kiosk has roots in the Persian/ Farsi kūshk and the Turkish köşk.2 In Swedish, kiosk does not sound the same as it is in English. It has an SH sound: SHOW-SK. If you feel like diving deep into the theme of the picturebook, I have the following activity for you 🖍
- If you could design your own kiosk, what would it look like?
- What items would you sell from kiosken?
- Where would you place it? Any specific neighborhood or landscape?
Here are some inspiring photos!

This picture, in particular, reminds me of the TV show A League of Their Own ⚾️

I found this PDF publication titled Vart tar alla kiosker vägen? 3 produced by Bohusläns Museum. It is in Swedish and contains many archived photos of korv och glass kiosker 🌭🍦 around Sweden. Here’s a sneak peek of some of the photos.

Extra points for answering in Swedish! Email me if you want to share a sketch with the newsletter readers! nyttchapter@gmail.com I will dedicate a post to ideas/ sketches.
